This sub section includes data on temperature (minimum & maximum) and rainfall recorded at selected stations at 08.00 and 17.00 Hrs, PST, daily by the meteorological observato¬ries. The meteorological observers, also record other meteorological elements like air pressure, temperature (Maximum and Minimum) dry and wet bulb temperature, humidity, dew point temp., horizontal visibility, clouds wind (Direction and Velocity) and other important weather phenome¬na like thunder storm, lightening, dust storm, hailstorm, fog., mist., etc. After recording all the meteorological data at hours mentioned above in the daily pocket register. The meteorological observatories transmit telegraphically these data in coded form to meteorological office, Karachi. The meteorological office utilizes these data to issue daily weather forecast. These data are also published in the regional daily weather report which is issued by the meteorological office, Karachi. The meteorological observations recorded daily at differ¬ent hours are copied by the observers in monthly meteorolog¬ical register and this register is sent to regional centre at Karachi in the first week of every month. These registers are then thoroughly scrutinized by the trained meteorological staff at Karachi and necessary corrections are applied, where necessary.
Since the inception of Pakistan five Censuses have been conducted, the first one in 1951, the second one in 1961, the third one in 1972, fourth in 1981 and fifth census which was scheduled to be conducted in 1991 has been conducted in March, 1998, detailed results have been released. These Censuses were conducted by the Population Census Organization, Government of Pakistan. Population Census Organization defines urban areas as follows: Urban Areas: The 1961 Census defined “Urban” as “All Municipalities, Civil Lines, Cantonments and any other area inhabited by not less than 5,000 persons and consisting of a continuous collection of houses”. In applying this definition it has been found that almost all urban areas are fully constituted Municipalities or areas administered by Notified Area Committees. In few cases places having distinctly urban characteristics have been classified as urban areas although their population falls a short of 5,000. Note:- As a result of administrative changes, numbers of new districts were created by bifurcating existing districts. Population figures in this publication are of the districts as stood in the year of census. For instance Ghotki district was created from within Sukkur district in the year 1993. This publication shows population of Ghotki in the year 1998 only.
This sector includes information on the following: i) Land utilization. ii) Agricultural inputs: canal withdrawals, sale of fertilizer, distribution of seeds and consumption of pesticides. iii) Tube wells, bulldozers, plant protection and private & government farms. iv) Cropped area, un irrigated and irrigated, by different modes of irrigation, total area sown under various crops. v) Area, production and yield per hectare of major crops, area & production of minor crops, fruits, vegeta¬bles, condiments and pulses. vi) Commanded & irrigated area by barrages.
This Sector covers the Statistics on the following. i) Census of Manufacturing Industries (C.M.I). ii) Monthly Survey of Industrial Production and Employment. 1. Census of Manufacturing Industries (C.M.I). Census of Manufacturing Industries (CMI) is conducted under Industrial Statistics Act 1942 and covers those establishments registered under factories act 1934 and engage in manufacturing activities for the whole or part of the year. Census of Manufacturing Industries (CMI) is conducted as a regular feature through joint Efforts of the Federal Bureau of Statistics, provincial Directorate of Industries and SINDH Bureau of Statistics. 2. Monthly Survey of Industrial Production and Employment. Bureau of Statistics conducts Monthly Survey of Industrial Production and Employment to collect information on 96 items manufactured in 31selected large scale Industries covering 598 industrial establishments in Sindh. These industries account for 68.83% of total value added in terms of production during 1980-81, Census of Manufacturing Industries. In addition to collection, compilation, tabulation and processing of data, Bureau of Statistics also computes Index of Industrial Production, which is an important indicator of economy.
This sector includes data on electricity consumption and number of consumers by KESC & WAPDA. Number of new electricity connection given by WAPDA alongwith installed generating capacity of power statistics, natural gas consumption and its number of consumers in Sindh. Karachi Electric Supply Corporation Ltd. (KESC) is responsible for gener¬ation and distribution of electricity of Karachi division whereas Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) generates electricity from national grid and supplies elec¬tricity to all the areas of Sindh excluding Karachi. Therefore, it may be concluded that totals of KESC and WAPDA figures represent Sindh figure. The gas data is collected annually from SUI SOUTHERN Gas Company, which was formerly consisted of two factions namely Karachi Gas Company and Indus Gas Company. Karachi Gas company was responsible for distribution of gas to Karachi division where as Indus gas company was responsible for distribution of gas to interior Sindh (Excluding Karachi). The gas data given in table no. 7.09 and 7.10 includes data of Karachi Gas as well as Indus Gas company.
This sector covers three years data of the following categories. A. Schools B. Colleges / Institutions C. Universities 1. School The information covers number of institutions, enrolment and teaching staff of Primary, Middle, and Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools by sex and districts. SEMIS has covered only those institutions which are running under the Administrative control of Education Department, Government of Sindh. 2. Colleges/Institutions The data of Intermediate, Degree and Post Graduate Colleges (Non-Professional Colleges) such as No. of institutions, enrolment, teaching staff by sex and by district pertaining to Government, Private and Autonomous colleges is given. Bureau of Statistics has covered those private and Autonomous (Intermediate & Degree) colleges which are registered with Ex-Directorate of College Education, now District Officer Education (Colleges) and Federal Government. Whereas unregistered Private Colleges are not covered. In Professional side data of Private / Autonomous Homoeopathic and Tibbia colleges registered with Federal Government is also collected and incorporated in the publications, whereas rest of the categories of colleges / institutions pertains to Government sectors. On Technical institutions side information of no. of institutions, enrolment and teaching staff by sex and by district pertains to Government institutions only. 3. Universities The information given in this publication covers total No. of Universities, total enrolment and total teaching staff by sex of Government sector Universities & Private Sectors.
Annual data in respect of the following items is presented in this section: Number of Health institutions. Number of Beds in Health institutions. Medical & Para-medical Personnel. Coverage These statistics relate to Hospitals, Dispensaries, T.B Clinics, Rural Health Centers, Basic Health Units and Maternity & Child Health Centers located in the Sindh and administrated by Directorate General Health Services, Govt. of Sindh. The Health institutions belonging to the Federal Govt., Defense Services and Private Doctors are not being covered. Data Collection System The Health institutions belonging to Directorate General Health Services in the Province maintain the record of number of beds and outdoor and indoor Patients. All type of Health institutions supply annual statistical returns to the District Health Officers containing information of number of Patients treated for various diseases, number and type of operations performed etc.. The District Health officers submit consolidated returns to the Directorate General of Health Services where the information is tabulated and consolidated at the Provincial level.
